The Night the Music Stopped
Adrian fronted a city band that played loud enough to shake dust from the rafters and, when the money was right, kept the lights on in a cramped apartment he shared with his girlfriend, Selene. He was straight, faithful, and tired of feeling like he had to prove it.
The trouble started after a club set downtown, the kind of show musicians took when the world was beginning to breathe again and rent still did not care. Backstage, while the crowd thinned and the last feedback died in the speakers, Adrian found Tomas, the guitarist, coming apart at the seams.
Tomas had a history Adrian knew too well: scars hidden under sleeves, sleepless nights, and a stubborn refusal to let anyone help. That night he was crying so hard he could barely stand, fingers clawing at the stitches near deep cuts he had reopened in a spiral of panic.
Adrian caught him before he could hurt himself worse. He wrapped both arms around him, bracing him the way a person braces a collapsing wall. Tomas folded into the hug, shaking and broken, while Adrian murmured nonsense meant only to keep him grounded.
Then Selene stormed in.
She seized Adrian by the arm and yanked him upright so violently he nearly lost his footing. Her face was white with rage. She accused him of cheating on her with Tomas, of lying to her for money, of using her while sneaking around behind her back.
Adrian stared at her in disbelief. Tomas was sobbing. Adrian’s shirt was damp with tears and sweat, his hands still half-raised as if he were holding onto the edge of a cliff. None of it mattered. Selene shoved him away and stalked out into the night.
One of the drummers stayed with Tomas while Adrian chased after Selene. They fought all the way home, through the stairwell and into the apartment, words thrown like broken glass. By dawn they were no longer talking like lovers. They were talking like enemies.
When morning came, Selene demanded an apology before she even got out of bed.
"For what?" Adrian asked.
That only made the argument worse.
By the end of the day, Selene had moved to her sister’s place. Adrian was left staring at the empty side of the bed, thinking back on small things he had ignored before: her hidden phone, the late-night messages, the way she flinched when he came near while she was texting.
He did not know whether she had been unfaithful. By then, he discovered he no longer cared enough to solve the mystery.
What he did care about was Tomas.
The guitarist had been taken to the hospital after Adrian left, because in the confusion he had torn out the stitches and needed to stay overnight. His father, flown in from another country, came to collect him the next day. Adrian managed to visit before they left.
Tomas looked medicated and far away, his eyes dull with exhaustion, but when he recognized Adrian, something in his face softened. They spoke quietly for a while. They hugged, this time without anyone tearing them apart, and Tomas promised to call when he could.
The band was put on hold after that. Tomas needed time before he could return, and the bassist had broken his foot in an absurd accident that seemed almost cruelly timed.
Adrian stood in the wreckage of his week and laughed once, bitterly, at how neatly life had taken everything apart.
Still, there was one small mercy in it all: the ugly thing with Selene had ended before it could grow any uglier, and Tomas was headed home to family, medication, and, hopefully, a quieter head.
The music would come back someday.
For now, silence was the only thing that did not demand too much.
